Our History

Founded in 2000 by Kate Grayson - a successful IT systems, auditing and project management consultant with Pierrepont, Grayson and Breen - she launched her second entrepreneurial endeavor with a pioneering vision to establish a first-of-its-kind, stand-alone biomedical specimen storage business in New York. Decoupled from the traditional model where the storage of these specimens was typically a lower-priority part of a suite of laboratory services (at a high cost), Kate was determined to elevate the importance of storing biomedical specimens with a laser-focus on precision inventory management, multi-tiered security protocols, core Standard Operating Procedures that are customizable to each client’s unique needs, and subject to rigorous Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs - all at a substantial discount to customary pricing. Additionally, Kate’s personal involvement with each client was essential in creating a boutique consultancy dynamic with a shared commitment to high quality, value-added service. Kate recognized that these critical specimens had future potential and that by executing on its mission, Steelgate would enable clients to fully take advantage of such opportunities.

In 2004, Steelgate expanded its operation by purchasing a building in Florida, continuing to maintain its New York facility until 2006 when the Florida location became its headquarters. In response to international client demand, Steelgate opened an office in Belgium in 2008, eventually transferring client support to its US Headquarters in 2010.

In 2009, Steelgate established its Legal Services practice, specializing in the collection and preservation of biomedical evidence in support of law firms engaged in product liability litigation involving medical devices. Since then, Steelgate has expanded its legal practice area to include medical malpractice, women’s healthcare and consumer products. Steelgate has distinguished itself among both plaintiffs and defense attorneys as the biomedical-specimen-storage-facility-of-choice through these attorneys’ mutual consent to designate Steelgate as the service provider named in over a dozen court orders.

Steelgate endeavors to balance intellect with character and if being honorable, gracious and civilized seem to be vanishing concepts, at Steelgate these are the very values that guide the way in which we conduct business every day. Our reward is the praise of every satisfied and loyal client.
